It used to be just a small village but this city has developed itself, mainly since 2001, with the arrival of many tourists from all over the world, who have the desire to visit Los Glaciares National Park. The climate is dry throughout the year and quite cold.

The Los Glaciares National Park was declared Natural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. It is located about 80km from El Calafate and it is the home of many glaciers that descend from the continental ice mass. This region now represents one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. It is 350km long from north to south and 50 km wide and covers an area of 600,000 ha. There are two large lakes: the Viedma Lake in the north and the Argentine Lake in the south.

Perito Moreno Glacier is the best known glacier in the Argentine side at the southern part of the Andes. It is named after the Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno Pascacio in the late 19th century. In many scientific missions in order to demarcate the border between Argentina and Chile.

- With a height of 30 to 60 m. (equivalent to the Obelisk of Buenos Aires), Perito Moreno Glacier is not the largest in the area but certainly one of the most important ones and its access is easy comparing to other glaciers in the area. Its size (195 km2, 30 km long by 4 km wide) has not declined in the recent decades. On the contrary, since its birth at 1,500 m. altitude, it advances continuously on earth at a rate of approximately 2m per day.
