OVERVIEW

Destination Overview & Travel Experience

Peru brings together Pacific-coast sophistication and high-Andean heritage in a journey that moves from Lima to the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco. Lima offers a polished introduction through its historic center, coastal neighborhoods, museums, and internationally recognized food culture, while the Andes deliver a dramatic shift in scenery, altitude, architecture, and living traditions.

The Sacred Valley slows the pace before the journey reaches Machu Picchu, allowing travelers to experience Pisac, Ollantaytambo, mountain landscapes, and the engineering legacy of the Inca civilization. Machu Picchu itself is both a major archaeological site and a remarkable mountain sanctuary, set where the Andes meet the upper Amazon basin. Cusco then deepens the cultural narrative through its Inca foundations, colonial architecture, religious landmarks, markets, cafés, and nearby archaeological sites.

For travelers seeking a carefully structured first experience of Peru, this itinerary combines cultural depth, iconic scenery, guided interpretation, and enough independent time to absorb the destination without turning the trip into a rushed checklist. The result is a compact, high-value introduction to some of Peru’s most significant places and travel experiences.

PRACTICAL INTEL

Essential Travel Guide: Logistics, Weather & Tips

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

Peru’s coastal and Andean regions have very different seasonal patterns, so travelers should pack for contrasting conditions within the same journey.

Lima enters its warmer and brighter period from December onward. Official tourism information describes December through March as the capital’s sunnier and warmer season, while historical December climate data for western Lima shows generally mild-to-warm conditions and minimal rainfall.

Cusco and the southern Peruvian Andes follow a different pattern. December through March corresponds to the wetter season, with more frequent showers and cooler highland conditions. For this December 5–11 journey, travelers should therefore prepare for variable mountain weather even when Lima is warmer and drier. A light waterproof layer, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and clothing that can be layered are practical essentials.

✈️ Getting There

The journey begins in Lima, Peru, on December 5, 2026. International airfare to and from Lima is not included, allowing travelers to choose their own U.S. departure city, airline, schedule, or mileage redemption.

Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is Lima’s principal international gateway. The itinerary includes the required domestic flights between Lima and Cusco, together with checked baggage and applicable taxes.

Cusco is served by Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ). From Cusco, the itinerary continues by ground transfer into the Sacred Valley. Access to Machu Picchu follows the specified route through Ollantaytambo, Vistadome train service, arrival in Aguas Calientes, and bus transportation to the citadel.

💡 Travel Tips

Currency: Peru’s official currency is the Peruvian Sol, code PEN. Credit cards are widely useful in established hotels and tourism businesses, but carrying some local currency remains practical for smaller purchases and markets.

Language: Spanish is the principal language travelers will encounter. Quechua remains culturally important and widely present in the Andean regions of Peru.

Time Zone: Peru operates on Peru Time, GMT-5, throughout the year and does not observe daylight saving time.

Local Transportation: Included airport transfers, hotel transfers, guided transportation, rail service, and Machu Picchu access are handled according to the itinerary. During independent time in Lima, travelers should favor formal transportation or reputable app-based services and account for city traffic when planning additional activities.

Altitude: Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca sit at significantly different elevations. The itinerary places two nights in the Sacred Valley before the main Cusco stay. Travelers should consider their individual health and physical condition and consult their healthcare provider when appropriate; the optional Lake Titicaca Extension reaches still higher elevations.

Packing: Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a compact rain layer, and clothing suitable for layering. Temperatures can change significantly between Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco.
