PRACTICAL TIPS

Essential Travel Guide: Logistics, Weather & Tips

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

Paraty can be visited year-round, but the most comfortable travel periods are generally during the drier and milder months from April to September. These months often bring better conditions for walking tours, scenic drives, private boat excursions, waterfall visits, and relaxed exploration of the Historic Center.

The warmer summer season, from December to March, is lush and vibrant but also brings higher humidity, more frequent rain, and stronger demand during holidays. This period can still be beautiful for travelers who enjoy tropical scenery and do not mind occasional showers.

Peak travel periods usually include Brazilian summer holidays, long weekends, festive dates, and major cultural event periods. Shoulder periods are often ideal for travelers seeking a more refined, less crowded experience with strong weather potential and better pacing.

✈️ Getting There

Paraty is most commonly accessed by private ground transfer from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. From Rio de Janeiro, the coastal drive follows Road 101 through scenic areas such as Itacurussá, Mangaratiba, and Angra dos Reis before reaching Paraty.

The primary international gateway for this itinerary is Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport (GIG), with Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) also serving domestic connections within Rio de Janeiro. Paraty does not function as a major commercial flight gateway for international travelers, so private transfers remain the most seamless option.

For luxury travelers, a private transfer is strongly recommended due to comfort, luggage handling, route flexibility, and the scenic nature of the Costa Verde drive.

💡 Travel Tips

Brazil uses the Brazilian Real (BRL), and credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and established tourism businesses. However, carrying some local currency is useful for small purchases, local vendors, and remote stops.

Portuguese is the official language. English and Spanish may be spoken in tourism settings, especially with guides, hotels, and private services, but Portuguese remains the dominant language in daily life.

Paraty follows Brasília Time, generally GMT-3. Travelers arriving from the U.S. East Coast should account for a modest time difference depending on daylight saving periods in the United States.

Comfortable walking shoes are essential because the Historic Center has uneven cobblestone streets. Light clothing, swimwear, sun protection, insect repellent, and a light rain layer are recommended, especially for boat tours, waterfalls, and forest areas.

Private touring is the best way to maximize the destination in a short stay, especially when combining the Historic Center, Paraty Bay, the Golden Route, waterfalls, and cachaça distilleries.
